This is the smallest (only 12-15 cm) of all the armadillos and is the only one with such strange fashion sense. It has a very light pink bony armor like shell covering the head and body. The smallest of all armadillo species, it has a poor developed eyesight. However, long claws and sensitive sense of smell increase the efficiency of food hunting. When frightened or threatened, it covers itself in the sand within a fraction of minutes. They live only in Argentina on the sandy plains and in arid grasslands and brush land.
